How a plantation shutter is actually built - and why it matters in Arizona.
A shutter's long-term quality comes down to three build details most spec sheets bury: the joinery holding the panel square, the stiles running its full height, and the cut of the louvers.
Norman engineers all three harder than Hunter Douglas or Graber, which is why its panels stay square and its louvers stay straight as they age - the difference between a shutter that still closes tight in year ten and one that shows light gaps.

Why does joinery matter on a shutter?
Because a shutter panel takes shear and racking stress every time it's opened, closed, and carried on its hinges. Norman uses mortise-and-tenon joinery - the joint traditionally used for demanding furniture and building construction, engineered for exactly that shear/racking load, and the one that tops independent joint-strength tests. Hunter Douglas uses furniture-grade dovetail joinery - a superb joint, but one optimized for the tension corners of a drawer, not a shutter's racking. Graber doesn't publish its panel joinery, which tells you how it ranks the feature.

What is a stile, and why is it the weak point?
The stile is the vertical side of the panel - the longest single piece, running the full height. It effectively floats, held to the window only by its hinges, so everything hangs off it. A solid, flat-sawn board there is free to bow over the years. Norman reinforces the stile with an engineered core - multiple layers of wood bonded under heat and pressure with opposing grain - which resists the bow that flat-sawn boards develop. Hunter Douglas and Graber use solid boards.
This is the single biggest structural difference between the three.
Why do louvers decide how a shutter ages?
Because there are more louvers in a house of shutters than any other component, and any bow in a louver shows up instantly as light gaps between the slats - which hurts both the look and the room-darkening and energy performance you paid for. Norman cuts its louvers quarter-sawn, which gives a tighter grain that resists cupping, twisting, and warping; most wood shutters use cheaper flat-sawn louvers.
Straighter louvers mean the whole house closes tighter and more uniformly, year after year.
The small details that add up.
- Recessed magnets (Norman) sit flush and won't protrude to cause light leaks or wear; protruding cabinet-style magnets are the cheaper approach.
- Climate-matched wood drying - Norman's Prescription Wood Conditioning dries wood to the moisture level of the region it ships to; the others dry to a single spec. Why do old shutters develop light gaps?
Louvers or panels that moved - from flat-sawn louvers, a bowed stile, or wood that wasn't dried for the climate. Straight louvers and square panels are construction outcomes, not luck.
