A louver has to stay perfectly straight.
A plantation louver spans two to three feet. If it bows even slightly, it won't close flat, and you get light gaps. Across that span, in desert heat, staying straight is hard.

Sanctuary is engineered so it physically can't do the things that ruin shutters in the desert. Where wood is organic and moves, Sanctuary is built from materials that don't.
- A co-extruded polymer body. The material is stable all the way through, and the color is integral to it - not a coat sitting on top waiting to peel. There's no organic fiber to warp and nothing on the surface to fade.
- An aluminum core, running through the louvers like an I-beam. It uses the same principle as the steel joist under a floor. That metal spine keeps a wide louver dead-straight across its full span, and runs through the rails and stiles too, so the panel stays square and closes tight for the life of the shutter.
- A waterborne, baked-on finish. Baked on, not brushed on - so it won't crack or peel under UV and heat, and it's fully waterproof. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere with moisture.

Normandy is made from paulownia, Norman's Phoenix Wood - a real hardwood with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. It allows wider panels for bigger, less-obstructed views and takes stain beautifully.
The honest trade: Normandy is still real wood - a medium-density hardwood. It resists warping far better than cheap wood, but it can be dented by a hard knock, and wood damage is hard to repair. That's the trade for authentic wood beauty.

What's the difference between Sanctuary and Normandy?
Sanctuary is an engineered composite with an aluminum core and a baked-on finish - indestructible and worry-free, and it won't fade, warp, crack, or peel. Normandy is real paulownia wood, engineered with quarter-sawn louvers and laminated stiles to resist warping in the desert. Sanctuary is the worry-free default; Normandy is for those who want authentic real wood.
Is Sanctuary the same as Polywood or faux wood shutters?
It's in the composite family, but engineered further: a co-extruded polymer body plus an aluminum I-beam core through the louvers and stiles for rigidity, and a waterborne baked-on finish that won't peel. The aluminum core is the part most composite shutters don't have.
Are wood shutters a bad idea in Arizona?
Cheap wood shutters are, because desert heat and UV warp and fade them. Properly engineered wood - quarter-sawn louvers, laminated stiles, and climate-conditioned wood like Normandy - holds up far better. It is still real wood, so it can dent, but it is built to last here in a way cheap wood isn't.
