Replacement & upgrades

Replace old plantation shutters - the right way.

If your shutters are warped, yellowed, sagging, or falling apart - and they came from another company or the builder - you've probably already found that a repair won't hold. The material is done.

The good news: replacing failing shutters is one of the most dramatic upgrades a room can get, and we do it constantly. We take the old ones away and leave you with windows built for the desert this time.

Here's when replacement is genuinely the right call - and what changes when you make it.

Signs it's replacement time, not repair time.

Warping and sagging

Hollow vinyl louvers soften and bow in the Arizona sun and never recover. Once a panel has warped, no adjustment straightens it - the shape is set.

Yellowing

Sun breaks down cheap finishes and white turns cream, then yellow - unevenly, window by window. It can't be cleaned off or repainted; the color change is in the material.

Brittleness and breakage

UV embrittles budget product until louvers snap at the staples. And when the line was discontinued years ago, there are no matching parts to repair it with anyway.

Moisture damage

MDF-core shutters in a bathroom or kitchen swell and delaminate once the skin is breached. A swollen core can't be reversed - that shutter's finished.

What changes when you replace them.

Two things change, and both matter. First, the room: crisp, straight, uniform shutters do more to refresh a space than almost anything short of new floors - especially when they're replacing something warped and discolored you'd stopped really seeing.

Second, the material. If your shutters failed, they were the wrong product for this climate. Our Sanctuary poly shutters are solid engineered polymer with an aluminum skeleton and a baked-on finish that won't warp, crack, yellow, fade, or peel - and sun and UV damage are covered for life by our Everything's Covered Guarantee. Where a room calls for real wood, our Normandy line is the engineered version done right.

The result isn't a like-for-like swap. It's the set you buy once - the reason so many of our replacement customers say they wish they'd done it years ago.

How the replacement works.

Simple, and we handle the messy part:

  • A designer measures every opening and shows you real samples in your own light - free, no obligation
  • Your new shutters are custom-built to those exact windows, so they fit where the old ones never quite did
  • Our own installers remove the old product, install the new, and haul the old material away
  • You get an honest price up front - and, on Sanctuary, a written guarantee so this is the last time

From our Google reviews.

“I had my shades installed today by Turner from Southwest Blinds & Shutters and I couldn't be happier than I am right now! Southwest Blinds fixed an issue that a previous company botched and the experience is like night and day! From the moment he showed up Turner showed true professionalism… I highly recommend Southwest Blinds & Shutters for any window treatment needs.”

Replacement questions, answered straight.

What homeowners ask before replacing failing shutters.

Can old vinyl or MDF shutters be repaired instead of replaced?

Usually not in a way that lasts. Once hollow vinyl has warped or yellowed, the material itself has changed - you can't straighten or bleach it back. MDF-core shutters that have swelled from moisture can't be un-swelled. And discontinued lines mean no matching parts. When the product is at end of life, replacement is the honest answer, not a repair that fails again next summer.

Why hollow vinyl fails here →
Do you remove and haul away my old shutters?

Yes - our installers take down the old product, install the new shutters, and take the old material with them. You come home to finished windows, not a pile in the garage. It's part of the install, not an add-on.

Will new shutters fit my existing window openings?

They're built to. Every shutter is custom-made to your exact openings, so whatever the last company left behind - odd sizes, out-of-square frames, arches - the new set is measured and manufactured to fit precisely. That's the whole point of the in-home measure.

How is a replacement any different from what I have now?

If your current shutters are failing, they were almost certainly the wrong material for Arizona. Our Sanctuary poly is solid, aluminum-reinforced, and finished to resist the exact sun and heat that ruined the last set - and it's covered for life by our written guarantee. It's not a like-for-like swap; it's the version built to be a one-time purchase.
